By changing the amount of fill, pillows of different sizes can make sleeping more comfortable. Also, they come in different sizes to fit different beds and pillow cases. It doesn’t have to be hard to find the right pillow. Just remember a few things, and you will always choose the right size.

1. Know the sizes of your bed pillows to make the most comfortable bed.

Pillows come in many different sizes, most of which match the sizes of beds. The Super Standard, which is often called Standard/Queen or Jumbo, gives retailers an option between the small and medium sizes so they can hang more types of bed pillows. Our Pillow Sizes Chart shows the most common sizes for each type of pillow. However, sizes can vary a lot, so be sure to look at the size if you need something specific.

2. Make sure your pillows are the right size for your bed, or be inventive.

It might seem easy to just buy a king-sized pillow for a king-sized bed, but you can actually use any size pillow on a king-sized bed. A good rule of thumb is to get pillows that are the same size as your bed, but after that, you can get creative. Even though there are fewer options for a Queen or Full size bed, there are hundreds of pillow combinations, so don’t be shy if you find something else you like. Here are some classics that will help you find your own style:

Do you need to worry about the size of your bed pillow case?

Standard and King are the two sizes of pillow cases for beds. Standard size is made to fit Standard, Super Standard, and Queen pillows. Luckily, sheet manufacturers make their cases bigger than they need to be to account for the differences between manufacturers. This means that, in the worst case, the pillow case will have more room than less.

Pro Tips:

  • If you want your pillow to be able to fluff and shape itself, buy a bigger pillow case. This is especially true if you have a gusseted pillow, which is made to loft.
  • If you want your pillow to keep its height and size, or if you want to give an old pillow new life, go for a smaller size.
  • Use the hotel trick of tucking the ends of your pillow case in tight to give it more height and bulk.

4. Think about conformity for more comfort

Some sleepers, especially those who sleep on their side or stomach, like to shape and squish their pillow, sometimes several times a night, so that it stays soft and fluffy and fits their head. Most of the time, these people find that a king-sized pillow or even a queen-sized pillow is too big, and they prefer a Standard or Super Standard size instead.

Some people like to put a pillow over their head to block out light and noise. These people need a light pillow that molds to their head, so they probably wouldn’t choose a king or queen size for this. A softer pillow would work well, like one with all-down or a down-alternative fill (maybe one that is being put away).

5. For the best bedpillow experience, other sizes matter

Standard Pillow Size: These are the best sizes for sleeping, so these are the ones we recommend first. The problem with a long pillow is that the filling can move to the ends more easily, and since it has more volume, it can’t be squashed as easily. Some people like a shorter pillow because they like how it fits in their bed. You can also save money with these sizes, so people who don’t have a strong preference may choose the cheaper option.

Queen Pillow Size: If you move around a lot in your sleep, the Queen pillow is a good choice because it gives you a lot of space on each side of your head. Also, a big pillow can make your bedroom feel like a spa and make you feel like you’re getting away from it all.

Size of a King Pillow: King pillows were made for the extra width of a King or California King bed, but if your sleeper tosses and turns, they work great on a twin bed. You can also use them to support your back while reading or working on a laptop in bed. You can also use a king pillow as a shorter body pillow.

Euro Pillow Size: Because Euro Square pillows come in so many different sizes, it’s easy to find the right look for your bed. Most of the time, they are used as decor or reading pillows (whether we are reading a book or like to bring the laptop to bed). But did you know that in some European countries, like Germany and Holland, a 26″ square is also used as a pillow? If you buy new bedding while you’re traveling, you might need a different size pillow.

Pillows of different sizes: For a designer look, use pillows of different sizes on your bed. Use a larger size (king, queen, or euro) for your reading pillows, and then put the smaller size you prefer to sleep on in front. This gives you all the pillows you need and lets you mix and match colors and patterns in your shams and bed pillow cases.
